In November 2011, he released his first Christmas album and second studio album, Under the Mistletoe. His manager, Scooter Braun as well as his vocal producer Kuk Harrell affirmed a week later that Justin had made collaboration with various artists like Taylor Swift and Sean Kingston and also worked with producers like The Messengers. After a month, it was declared that Usher, Boyz II Men and The Band Perry also helped on the success of Under the Mistletoe. Even Mariah Carey revealed that she recorded her song "All I Want for Christmas Is You" with Bieber as a duet for his Christmas album.

After his second studio album comes the third one called Believe which departs from the teen pop sound from his former releases and comprises elements of R&B and dance-pop genres. The main purpose of this album was to develop a more mature sound, totally different from his previous ones. So Justin thought of doing collaborations with a wide range of urban producers, as well as some long-time collaborators that includes Diplo, Darkchild, Max Martin and Hit-Boy.
